Speaking on the occasion of International Mother Language Day, Minister Dr. Maryam Mariya stated that language is more than just a tool for communication—it shapes identity, culture, and thought.

She noted that while Dhivehi remains the foundation of Maldivian national identity, the growing influence of other languages presents challenges to its use and development. Minister Dr. Maryam Mariya also encouraged multilingual proficiency, stating that while Dhivehi must be safeguarded, the ability to communicate in multiple languages is crucial for strengthening global engagement. She called for policies that both preserve Dhivehi and enable it to evolve in a rapidly changing world.

Furthermore, she highlighted the need to equip future generations with strong language skills while ensuring they can navigate the digital landscape without compromising their cultural roots.

Her remarks align with ongoing efforts to promote Dhivehi in the digital space and education sector, ensuring the language remains a vital part of Maldivian society despite global linguistic influences.
