Maldives have received 12,000 doses of the Covid-19 vaccine, as the first shipment from the COVAX facility.

As per the UNICEF Maldives, Maldives received 12,000 doses of the Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine manufactured by Serum Institute of India. This would be the first vaccine delivery to the Maldives by the COVAX facility.

Following the arrival of the vaccines from the COVAX facility, the President of the Maldives Ibrahim Mohammed thanked the UNICEF, Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations (CEPI), and the World Health Organisation (WHO) for their support in delivering essential supplies.

COVAX (the COVID-19 Vaccines Global Access), is a global initiative aimed at equitable access to Covid-19 vaccines led by Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance (formerly the Global Alliance for Vaccines and Immunization, or GAVI), the World Health Organization (WHO), the Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations (CEPI), and others.

The COVAX facility earlier this month announced the allocation of over 330 million doses of Covid-19 vaccines for low- and middle-income countries. It aims to deliver these and millions more in the first half of 2021. On 24 February 2021, Ghana became the first country in the world to receive vaccines through the COVAX facility with 600,000 doses of the Oxford–AstraZeneca vaccine.

Early today, UNICEF South Asia had reassured that the first Covid-19 vaccines from the COVAX Facility will touchdown in Maldives, Nepal, Sri Lanka, and Afghanistan, either today or tomorrow.
