The Ministry of Health has announced the extension of the ongoing public health emergency for another month.

The order signed by the Minister of Health Ahmed Naseem announced that the current state of public health emergency declared in the Maldives in response to the coronavirus pandemic to be extended until June 3.

The Maldives announced a state of public health emergency on March 12 last year. The first such declaration under a recent public health protection law.

The recent extension of the state of public health emergency was ordered in considering the threat of a severe nationwide outbreak remaining widespread. With this, the Minister also ordered the Director-General of Public Health to take special measures required to mitigate the threat of Covid-19 in the Maldives.

With a surge in Covid-19 infections in recent weeks, over 25 residential islands outside of the greater Male' region are placed under monitoring. So far, Maldives has recorded 31,931 positive cases and 25,340 recoveries. The Maldives had reported 74 deaths recorded from Covid-19 complications.
