Maldives police have arrested two people over an assassination attempt on former President and current Speaker of the parliament, Mr. Mohamed Nasheed. The police Service has also released the identities of two suspects arrested for involvement in Thursday’s blast.

The explosion took place with a homemade remote-controlled IED, which was strapped to a motorcycle parked nearby President Nasheed’s residence. It was detonated just as President Nasheed, exited his residence and went to get in his car. Following the blast, President Nasheed was hospitalized with multiple shrapnel wounds, needing over 16 hours of surgery to remove shrapnel from his lungs, liver, chest, abdomen, and limbs.

In connection to the terror attack, Mujaz Ahmed, 21, Ma. Feyruge, K. Male’ and Thahmeen Ahmed, 32, Folheyma, Ga. Kondey was arrested. As per the Police Service, Mujaz is suspected of being directly linked with the person who detonated the IED, and Thahmeen is the owner of the motorcycle to which the IED was strapped.

Although two people have been arrested, the police said on Friday they are pursuing four persons of interest whose behavior at the scene of the explosion was found to be suspicious. The police have released CCTV footage of the explosion and asked for anyone with information regarding the attack to call the hotline 9704000 or submit information to the online evidence submission portal.
