The emir of Kuwait, Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah, died at the age of 91.

Sending in condolences to the Crown Prince Nawaf, the royal family and Kuwaiti people, President of the Maldives, Ibrahim Mohamed tweeted saying that the world has lost a great reformer, diplomat and peacemaker.

Sheikh Sabah's death was announced by the Minister of Emiri Diwan (Court) Affairs, Sheikh Ali Jarrah al-Sabah. Although Sheikh Jarrah did not give a cause of death nor say where the emir died, in July, following a surgery for an unspecified condition, Sheikh Sabah was flown to the United States for further medical treatment. Since then his half-brother and crown prince, 83-year-old Sheikh Nawaf al-Ahmad al-Sabah, have taken on his tasks temporarily.

Sheikh Sabah was the Foreign Minister of Kuwait for over four decades before becoming Kuwait's ruler in 2006.

As per the UN Secretary General António Guterres the emir is an extraordinary symbol of wisdom and generosity, a messenger of peace, a bridge builder.
