The Parliament has passed the amendment to raise taxes starting next January, with votes from 55 members.

The amendment to raise TGST taken from the tourism industry and GST taken from goods and services, after being passed by the Whole House Committee, has been passed today by the Parliament as it was proposed by the government without any change.

This amendment was one that caused disagreements within the Parliament after the vote was denied saying there was a lack of quorum.

Today, the bill was passed with the votes of 55 members. 26 members voted against it, out of which 14 belonged to MDP.

The government's amendment proposes raising GST from 6% to 8% and TGST from 12% to 16%.

The Maldives Public Expenditure Review (PER) report released by the World Bank has praised this decision of the government.
