A relentless storm that has killed almost 50 people throughout the United States and disrupted Christmas travel has emergency personnel in New York trying to rescue marooned citizens from what officials are calling the "blizzard of the century."

The US Northeast is still experiencing blizzard conditions as a result of a major spread of extreme weather that seized the nation over many days and resulted in extensive power outages, lengthy travel delays, and at least 49 fatalities across nine states, according to official statistics.

The extreme weather sent temperatures to below freezing in all 48 contiguous US states over the weekend, including in Texas communities along the Mexico border where some newly arriving migrants have struggled to find shelter. The perfect storm of fierce snow squalls, howling wind, and sub-zero temperatures have forced the cancelation of more than 15,000 US flights in recent days, including over 3,800 on Monday, according to a tracking site.
