Dr Jameel raised concerns over the action taken against the constitutional right to freedom of assembly and freedom of expression practised during the cycle rally held yesterday. He described the actions from the police towards the participants at yesterday's rally, as a shameful act by the government in order to stop a peaceful gathering to raise their voice.

“The community will win against violence and the voice of the youth is the voice of the country” says the former vice president, Dr Jameel Ahmed.

He also added that if the needs and concerns of the people aren't being addressed to, they will still get out to the road to raise their voice. And trying to stop raising their voice has always failed, the people of the Maldives will not tolerate everything and stay silent.

During the rally held yesterday, police made several arrests, some of them were seen getting arrested brutally. Police also used pepper spray and towed some of the cycles to stop yesterday's rally.

Police did warn earlier yesterday that legal action will be taken against those who organize and participate in gatherings in violation of HPA’s guidelines.

With a higher number of Covid-19 cases in the greater male’ area, to control further spreading, HPA has included gathering of more than 5 people, as violation of the guidelines issued by HPA.
