The Maldives is the third country to graduate from low-income country status to middle-income country status. Low-income nations with significant structural barriers to sustainable development are referred to as LDCs by the United Nations. Forty-six nations currently hold LDC status.
The 5th UN Conference on the Least Developed Countries (LDC5) aims to accelerate sustainable development where it is most needed internationally and maximise the potential of LDCs to assist them in moving forward on the path to prosperity. The plenary session also featured a commemorative event to mark the 50th anniversary of the founding of the Group of LDCs.
This year, the once-a-decade conference is held at the Qatar National Convention Centre in Doha, Qatar.
