The Speaker of the Parliament, The People’s Majlis, Mohamed Nasheed has said that the present deadlock in the legislative assembly hardly serve the higher interests of the nation.

Following submission of a no-confidence motion against the Speaker, backed by 54 MPs from ruling MDP, early this month, Nasheed has not been chairing sittings for some time now.

Nevertheless, chairing today’s sitting - the last day of the current session of the parliament, Nasheed said that the parliament faced the present stalemate after no-confidence motions against the Speaker and the Deputy Speaker were filed almost simultaneously.

“My excuses to not chair debates are insignificant when it comes to upholding the higher national interests. Those are the interests of the people. Those are the interest of the nation. The deadlock in the Majlis does not serve the national interests”, Nasheed said starting today’s sitting.

Temporary Chair of the Majlis, MP Hassan Afeef, Vilufushee Constituency, held a meeting with President Solih on Monday to discuss the stalemate.

Speaking on the meeting, Speaker Nasheed earlier said that it was on his request that MP Afeef sat with President Solih to discuss breaking the present deadlock.

Over the past weeks, Majlis has not been able to conduct real business due to disruptions to sittings caused by protests in the chamber among other disorders in the House.
