The Mayor of Malé City and the presidential nominee of the People’s National Congress (PNC) Dr. Mohamed Muizzu will submit his candidacy to the Elections Commission of Maldives today.

A close associate of Mayor Muizzu who was the housing minister in the administrations of former presidents Dr. Mohamed Waheed Hassan Manik and Abdulla Yameen, told Ras.mv that he had made the decision to run in the September 9 presidential election.

He also said that Mayor Muizzu would not wait for a joint decision of the main opposition PPM-PNC Coalition as the deadline for submission of candidacies will expire at 1400 hours today.

Muizzu won PNC’s presidential nomination as a backup candidate for President Yameen if the latter fails to qualify for the race.

The Supreme Court of the Maldives decided on Sunday that President Yameen did not have the qualities a presidential nominee should possess per the relevant laws.

Soon afterwards President Yameen ordered the leadership of the coalition to boycott the election.

However, the joint senates of the Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) and the People’s National Congress (PNC) decided to put President Yameen’s order into the garbage bin of the coalition’s history.
