President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih says that better planning is needed to pay favorable prices to tuna fishers in the country. However, he promised fishers that if he won a second term in office, he would raise buying prices of tuna catches.

President Solih who is touring Faadhippolhu Atoll as part of his “Happy and Peaceful Maldives” presidential bid, told fishers on the Island of Naifaru today that the state-owned Maldives Industrial Fisheries Company (MIFCO) is working with the government to facilitate a better playing field for the fishers in the country.

He told the residents of the island that the extent of the abandonment of the sector by the previous government was regrettable.

“We are working on creating a better playing field for the fishers. You would witness the positive change that we will bring to the sector in the next term”, said President Solih.

However, President Solih said that former President Abdulla Yameen raised MIFCO’s buying prices in the election year. President Solih also said that the fishers were not paid the higher prices when he took office in 2018.
