Minister of Transport and Civil Aviation, Aishath Nahula, said that the newly built Hoarafushi Airport would enhance the economy of the northern region.

Speaking at the Hoarafushi Airport inauguration ceremony, Minister Nahula said that the Airport would bring more jobs and enhance the economical development of the northern region. She highlighted that the fast development and inauguration of the Hoarafushi Airport reflects on the President's development policy for the northern region.

Speaking further, she praised and appreciated President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih and the government for continuous progress in economic and social development.

The development of an airport in Hoarafushi Island delivers a campaign pledge of the President, and it is the first Airport to be developed in Haa Alifu Atoll.
The Hoarafushi Airport development project was initially planned to be built in Maafinolhu of the same atoll by the previous administration. But under the administration of President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih decided to move the project to Hoarafushi.

The Hoarafushi Airport development project was completed in 576 days by the Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC). MTCC was contracted in early 2019 by the Ministry of Transport and Civil Aviation for the development of the Hoarafushi Airport.
