Sergei Lavrov, the foreign minister of Russia has criticized the West's approach towards the Global South regarding the conflict in Ukraine. He accused them of adopting a neo-colonial mentality to gain support and referred to them as an empire of lies. Furthermore, Lavrov expressed his disapproval of the West's actions.
During a recent speech at the United Nations building in New York, Lavrov boldly declared that the Western countries were misleading the majority of the world. This statement was made following a week of intense international diplomacy, during which Ukraine and its Western allies endeavored to garner support for Kyiv in its struggle against Russian invasion.
“The US and its subordinated collective continue to fuel conflicts which artificially divide humanity into hostile blocks and hamper the achievement of overall aims,” Lavrov said.
During a news conference after the speech, the foreign minister rejected Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky's 10-point proposal and the UN's latest proposals to revive the Black Sea grain initiative.
“It is not possible to implement this. It’s not realistic and everybody understands this, but at the same time, they say this is the only basis for negotiations.”
He also rejected Kyiv's peace plan, deeming it unworkable and impractical. Nevertheless, it continues to serve as the exclusive foundation for negotiations. Moreover, he noted that Moscow was unlikely to accept the UN proposal, citing the West's failure to lift sanctions on a Russian bank and reconnect it to the SWIFT system as promised.
