One of the masterminds of the November 3, 1988, terrorist attacks in the Maldives, who is now imprisoned, Abdullah Luthufee, will be released from jail this month, according to the Correctional Service of the Maldives.

Luthufee was sentenced to death in connection with the November 3 attacks in the Maldives, but then President Maumoon commuted the sentence to life imprisonment. Under the laws of the country, the life sentence is 25 years.

A corrections official told the media that Luthufee's sentence was executed last June. However, he is currently serving his sentence in 2010 for escaping after being sent for medical treatment.

Luthufee will complete his sentence on the 27th of this month. From then, he will be completely free, the corrections said.

The 1988 Maldives coup d'état attempt was by a group of Maldivians led by businessman Abdullah Luthufi and assisted by armed mercenaries of a Tamil secessionist organization from Sri Lanka, the People's Liberation Organisation of Tamil Eelam (PLOTE), to overthrow the government of the Maldives. The attempt was thwarted with Indian assistance in Operation Cactus.
