Two Self claimed exorcists have been arrested for sexually abusing a woman and her kids in the name of Ruqya.
Maldives Police Service, on Thursday, confirmed that two local males, aged 24 and 39, were arrested over allegations of sexually abusing a woman and her kids in the name of Ruqya.
The two people arrested are accused of psychological, physical, and sexual abuse perpetrated against a woman and her three daughters while confined to a house under the premise of Ruqya (exorcism).
Speaking to local media outlet Mihaaru, the woman revealed that she and her kids were confined in her husband's house in August with a man from the island that practiced Ruqya. She also said that her husband told her that he believed her migraines to be the result of supernatural possession by Jinn, and that's when exorcism (practicing Ruqya) started.
The husband of the woman is accused of both supporting the acts, and taking part in some of them. Furthermore, the woman has said that they were physically abused, treated as a slave, denied an adequate amount of food, and sleep deprivation.
Additionally, the woman also said that no assistance was received from neighbors, friends, social workers, and Police officers at the island, despite having been notified of the ongoing abuse.
Ruqyah is the practice of treating illnesses through Quran verses and invocations practiced in the religion of Islam. It is believed to provide a cure for evil eyes, magic, and physical ailments.
Maldives Police Service and Ministry of Gender, Family and Social Services advocate reporting any such incidents involving any form of abuse immediately.
