Indian Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal has said that the two countries will continue to work together on the withdrawal of Indian troops from the Maldives.
Randhir was responding to questions from Indian journalists at a press conference held by the Ministry of External Affairs today.
Randhir said the two countries have started talks on the matter and will announce their decisions as the discussions progress. Randhir also said the two countries would give priority to consensus in decision-making.
In addition, India has already presented important issues at the High-Level Committee meeting attended by senior officials of the two countries, said Randhir. They discussed ways to strengthen bilateral foreign relations, accelerate the implementation of ongoing development projects in the Maldives with Indian assistance, and continue to provide humanitarian assistance in ensuring uninterrupted medical evacuations during emergencies, Randhir said.
Meanwhile, President Dr. Mohammed Muizzu has requested the withdrawal of Indian troops from the Maldives before 15 March. In addition, during COP-28 in Dubai, Dr. Muizzu met with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and asked him to withdraw the Indian troops from the Maldives as well.
A journalist asked the Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson if the Maldives had issued an official notice, but the spokesperson did not provide a clear answer. He said that he could not give a specific response since no decision has been made yet.
The President of the Maldives has pledged to withdraw Indian troops from the Maldives and resolve the issue peacefully through discussions with the Indian government.
