Bank of Maldives (BML) announces a reduction of foreign purchases made through its debit and credit cards, due to limited foreign money available in the Maldives.
The announcement states that any families living in foreign country will have a limit of 750 dollars per month for foreign transactions while whoever in the Maldives currently will have a limit of 250 dollars per month for foreign transactions. BML says that they are forced to make these changes due to limited availability of dollars and these changes were important to pay for students and those who are getting medical services in forign countries.
BML also assured that debit cards issued to dollar accounts will not have any limitations and continue upto 3000 dollars worth transactions per day. The limitations are only entitled to foreign purchases through Maldivian Rufiya accounts.
As this is a temporary change, BML verifies that this will not even affect 95% of its customers.
Along with the announcement BML has been getting a lot of pressure and criticism through social media. Most people have raised the concerns over the effects of these limitations towards the families living in foreign countries for different reasons.
