Indirectly to the defense lawyers of the former President Abdulla Yameen, Prosecutor General of the Maldives, Hussein Shameem has stated that requesting the disclosure of materials on what the defense desires are a common mistake made by inexperienced defense lawyers.
Further in his tweet, PG Shameem has stated that in criminal trials, disclosure of material only means disclosing the information collected during the investigation and used in the proceedings. He also highlighted that it is a common mistake made by inexperienced defense lawyers, adding that the lawyers should know the system.
Meanwhile, during the court hearing held on this Sunday, against the former President Yameen, his lawyers have stated that the government is upholding evidence against Yameen, and without the required documents, the defense can be baseless.
The lawyers said that even after requesting at the PG office, the documents were not, handed in yet. Lawyers highlighted that the government could not decide on what documents are required for the defense. Lawyers also said that without all the documents, the lawyers would not be able to address the charges pressed against the former President Yameen.

In criminal trials, disclosure of material (as per CROC) only means disclosing information collected DURING investigation and USED in the proceedings. Not ALL what defense desires. A common mistake made by novice defense lawyers.🤷🏼♂️#knowthesystem
