Sri Lankan President Gotabaya Rajapaksa has requested from Maldives President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih to assist in arranging funerals for Muslims dying in Sri Lanka due to the challenges Sri Lanka is facing to have funerals following Islamic religious law.
This was revealed today by a press statement issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Maldives.
The statement reads that President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih is consulting with concerned authorities to find out the possibilities to address the request of the Sri Lankan President. Further in the statement reads that the President is looking into the possibility of arranging special assistance to Sri Lankan Muslims in the pursuit of Islamic fraternity and the light of the long-standing friendly relations between the Maldives and Sri Lanka.
Earlier, Sri Lanka daily newspaper the Daily Mirror has reported that Sri Lankan authorities are looking into the logistics of arranging a funeral in a separate island in the Maldives for Muslims dying in Sri Lanka from Covid, as arranged by the Maldives Government.
