The former President Maumoon Abdul Gayyoom, who set the record for his long-running 30 years as the President of the Maldives, has spoken against bringing in bodies of foreign Covid-19 victims to be buried in the Maldives.
He has stated this following the request by Sri Lanka to assist in arranging funerals for Muslims dying in Sri Lanka due to the challenges Sri Lanka is facing to have funerals following Islamic religious law.
In regards, the former President Maumoon Abdul Gayyoom has tweeted his concerns and spoke against bringing in bodies of Covid-19 victims who passed away, to be buried in the Maldives. He added that all foreign visitors, irrespective of their nationality and faith, are welcome for a happy and peaceful stay in the Maldives.
Upon the request by Sri Lankan President Gotabaya Rajapaksa, President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih is consulting with concerned authorities for the possibility of arranging special assistance to Sri Lankan Muslims in the pursuit of Islamic fraternity and the light of the long-standing friendly relations between the Maldives and Sri Lanka.
