Iran's Foreign Minister, Hossein Amirabdollahian, criticized the European Union's decision to impose sanctions following Iran's recent attack against Israel, branding the move as "regrettable" in a statement posted on X on Tuesday. Amirabdollahian defended Iran's actions, asserting that the country was merely acting in self-defense.
The attack, which involved the launch of over 300 drones and missiles on Israel, was declared by Iran as retaliation against a suspected Israeli bombing of its embassy compound in Damascus. In response to Iran's offensive, the EU foreign ministers convened on Monday and reached a consensus to extend sanctions on Tehran. These measures aim to restrict Iran's weapons exports, particularly of drones and missiles, to both its proxies and Russia.
Expressing disappointment with the EU's swift decision, Amirabdollahian urged the bloc to reconsider its stance and instead target Israel with sanctions for what he described as "reckless aggression." However, any further action on the EU's part will require additional deliberation and approval in Brussels to establish a legal framework before the sanctions can be implemented.
