The Health Protection Agency of the Maldives (HPA) has announced a guideline that allows political parties to be fined up to 100,000 Rufiyaa.
As per the recent guidelines set by the HPA, any individual who disobeyed any guidelines set by the director-general of public health during the state of a public health emergency will be fined up to 10,000 Rufiyaa. In addition, legal entities that disobeyed any guidelines set by the director-general of public health will be fined up to 100,000 Rufiyaa.
Since the political parties are defined under legal entities, the new guidelines are assumed to focus on the campaign opportunity open for the upcoming Local Council Election.
HPA has also stated that the recent guidelines will be acted upon until 60 days after ending the ongoing state of a public health emergency or any other state of emergency that will be announced during the Covid-19 pandemic. Hence it is also assumed that the current state of a public health emergency, could be ended by the time of the Local Council Elections.
