Hithadhoo South MP Ahmed Azaan has stated that the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) had hoped the current government would distance itself from India, but this expectation has not been realized. In an interview with local media, Azaan remarked on the government's balanced approach to foreign relations.
Azaan criticized the previous administration under President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih for strengthening ties with a particular country while severing relations with others, leading to undue influence. However, he praised the current government for adopting a balanced foreign policy. He emphasized that President Mohamed Muizzu has committed to strengthening relations with other countries without compromising Maldives' independence and sovereignty.
Highlighting the Maldives' current foreign policy, Azaan noted the government's efforts to maintain good relations with both India and China. He pointed out that, unlike the previous administration, which sought assistance primarily from India, the current government is seeking help from both nations. This balanced approach was particularly evident during the COVID-19 pandemic when the previous government predominantly relied on India.
Azaan acknowledged that relations with India deteriorated initially under the new government but have since improved. He concluded that the MDP's expectations of a one-sided foreign policy under President Muizzu have not materialized, reflecting a more balanced diplomatic stance.
