The first shipment of food staples imported from Turkey, consisting of flour, has been completely sold out within two months of its arrival, according to State Trading Organization (STO) media officer Yousuf Shaah.

Shaah reported that the initial shipment, which arrived on April 20, included 20,800 sacks of flour. This marks a significant step in diversifying the Maldives' food supply sources.

In addition to flour, Shaah emphasized that STO is prioritizing the importation of other essential items to ensure a steady supply for the Maldivian market.

This development follows an announcement made by President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu in January, where he revealed that an agreement had been signed with Turkey aimed at strengthening the Maldives' food security. The President had emphasized the importance of reducing the country's reliance on a single source for basic food items.

Speaking to the media earlier this year, President Muizzu outlined his administration's strategy to diversify food imports, including the procurement of wheat, sugar, and flour from Turkey. This move is part of a broader initiative to ensure food security and stability for the Maldives.
