Speaking at the 36th meeting of the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) Committee on Fisheries, Maldives Fisheries Minister Ahmed Shiyam emphasized the crucial role of the fishing industry in the Maldives' economy, revealing that it employs 11 percent of the national workforce. He stressed the importance of preserving and passing down this vital sector to future generations.

Minister Shiyam underscored the rich history and heritage of the Maldivian fisheries industry in his opening remarks, highlighting the Maldives' commitment to sustainable fishing practices. He noted that the country has implemented significant measures to protect its fisheries and marine resources, setting a global example for sustainable fishing.

The Minister also addressed the challenges faced by small and developing countries like the Maldives in the fisheries industry. He pointed out that one of the primary obstacles is the high cost associated with exporting fish products to the international market, which poses a significant barrier to growth and profitability.

By spotlighting these issues at the FAO Committee on Fisheries, Minister Shiyam aims to draw international attention to the needs and achievements of the Maldives’ fisheries sector, advocating for more support and collaboration to overcome these challenges and ensure the industry’s sustainability for future generations.
