Top Democrats, including Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer and former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, have reportedly intensified pressure on President Joe Biden to withdraw from his reelection campaign due to concerns about his ability to defeat Republican challenger Donald Trump. According to ABC News, Schumer met with Biden on Saturday and suggested that stepping down would be in the best interest of both the country and the Democratic Party.

House Democratic leader Hakeem Jeffries has also expressed similar concerns to Biden, according to a source familiar with the conversation. CNN reported that Pelosi communicated her worries to Biden, citing polling data indicating he may struggle to defeat Trump and warning that his candidacy could jeopardize the Democrats' chances of reclaiming control of the House of Representatives.

Despite these concerns, a spokesperson for Pelosi stated that she has not spoken to Biden since Friday. Democratic Representative Adam Schiff has become the 20th congressional Democrat to publicly call for Biden to withdraw from the race. Responding to these reports, Schumer’s office dismissed the claims as “idle speculation,” stating that he had conveyed the views of his caucus directly to the president.

Biden has steadfastly refused to drop out of the race, particularly after a lackluster debate performance last month against Trump. White House spokesperson Andrew Bates reiterated Biden’s stance, asserting that the president is committed to his campaign and intends to win. Bates also mentioned Biden’s eagerness to collaborate with both Schumer and Pelosi to advance his 100-day agenda aimed at supporting working families.
