Maldives Police Service has requested the Prosecutor General to file a case against RIX Company for human trafficking.

RIX Company Pvt Ltd, who were contracted to develop B. Bodufinolhu island to a resort is accused of forcing foreign laborers in B. Bodufinolhu island, exploiting them, and human trafficking.

In reference to Maldives Police Service, many local online media has reported that Police forwarded the case of alleged human trafficking against RIX Company Pvt Ltd to the Prosecutor General’s Office on December 3, 2020.

RIX Company has not paid wages due to the laborers employed under the company. Following this, massive unrest occurred in July last year by workers at the Bodufinolhu island. Under the Police investigation of the case, a Parliament member for Milandhoo constituency, Ali Riza, who is also the Managing Director of the RIX company, was questioned.

During the Police investigation, MP Ali Riza had admitted that four months of wages remained owed to the workers, and it was delayed due to the pandemic.

Following the massive unrest at the Bodufinolhu island, Police arrested 19 foreign laborers. The laborers stated at the court that they were warned and threatened when they begged for their due payment. They also said that when they complained about being unpaid for 06 months, a group of people who arrived on the island threatened the laborers to send to Male’ and withdraw wages due.
