The Maldives has awarded Dr. Mohamed Zahir Hussain its highest civilian honor, the Order of the Distinguished Rule of Izzuddin (ODRI), in recognition of his extensive contributions to the nation’s educational development.

The distinguished award was conferred upon Dr. Zahir Hussain during the Republic Day celebrations. It honors his lifetime dedication to advancing education across the Maldives. His work has significantly influenced educational accessibility and awareness nationwide.

Dr. Zahir Hussain, currently Chancellor of the Islamic University of Maldives, pursued his higher education at Al-Azhar University in Egypt. Returning to the Maldives, he began his career at Aminiya School and served in various roles, including Minister of Education. His contributions include founding the Science Education Center in 1979 and spearheading critical curriculum reforms to modernize and adapt the system for Maldivian students.

One of his flagship initiatives was the Basic Education Project, designed to enhance foundational education. Dr. Zahir Hussain served as Minister of Education for over a decade, and his leadership and vision continue to shape the Maldivian education system today.
