Former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has urged the people to work with renewed courage to maintain their power, emphasizing the importance of citizen involvement in preserving the democratic foundation of the nation.

His remarks were made in a post on X, marking the occasion of Republic Day.

President Solih, the 7th President of the Republic of Maldives, reflected on the core principle of a republic, stating that the state's power begins with the people. He stressed that maintaining the powers entrusted to the people in all national affairs is one of the fundamental pillars of a republic.

"In a republic, the powers of the state begin with the people. And maintaining the powers given to the people in all affairs of the country is the most important foundation of a republic," President Solih noted in his message.

Republic Day, observed annually on November 11, commemorates the Maldives' shift from a monarchy to a republic in 1968. The Maldives Parliament voted to abolish the constitutional monarchy in 1967, and following a referendum on March 15, 1968, over 80% of voters supported the establishment of a republic. On November 11, 1968, the second republic of the Maldives was officially proclaimed, marking a significant turning point in the nation’s political history.

President Solih’s message reminds us of the vital role the people play in shaping the future of the republic and their ongoing responsibility to ensure that their power is preserved and strengthened.
