South Galolhu Constituency MP Meekail Ahmed Naseem has expressed his frustration over the prolonged delay of an amendment aimed at banning Israeli passports, which has remained stuck in a parliamentary committee for 163 days.

The amendment, which seeks to prevent individuals from entering the Maldives on Israeli passports, was introduced by Meekail in good faith as a national issue. Despite being passed by parliament on June 10, the one-page amendment has yet to be debated in the House.

After the bill was referred to the 241 Committee, it was placed on the committee's agenda for November. However, the committee decided to postpone any discussions until February next year, a move that has sparked criticism from Meekail and other MPs.

The amendment aims to modify the Immigration Act by adding a clause to prevent Israeli passport holders from entering the Maldives. While the bill was supported by parliament earlier this year, it has faced significant delays in the committee.

MP Meekail emphasized that the issue is of great importance and should transcend political differences. The amendment is also seen as a response to the ongoing Israeli aggression toward Palestinians, with calls to take a firm stance on the matter.

The delay in addressing the bill has raised concerns about the government’s commitment to dealing with critical national issues. The parliamentary committee’s decision to postpone discussions has fueled further criticism, and there are growing calls for the bill to be expedited in the coming months.
