The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Maldives and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the People’s Republic of China today concluded the 7th Round of Bilateral Consultations at a virtual meeting held this Tuesday afternoon.
His Excellency Mr. Ahmed Khaleel, Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, led the Maldives Delegation, and His Excellency Mr. Lou Zhaohui, Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the People’s Republic of China, headed the Chinese Delegation.
In his opening remarks, His Excellency Mr. Ahmed Khaleel reiterated and reaffirmed the Government of Maldives’ unwavering commitment to the One-China Policy. State Minister Khaleel emphasized that the priority for the Maldives was to resume international travel and tourism between Maldives and China. He also emphasized holding extensive discussions with all stakeholders involved on how to move forward in preparation for the reopening of borders in China soon.
Both sides also held discussions on ongoing projects in the Maldives, and the Chinese side assured that all ongoing projects will continue and that new areas of cooperation between the two sides could be explored. Both sides also agreed to consult closely in preparation for the upcoming 50th Anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Maldives and China, which will occur in 2022.
During the consultation, His Excellency Mr. Lou Zhaohui noted that both countries enjoy close relations and coordination at the international level. He also highlighted that China further seeks to expand the existing ties and to strengthen the bilateral relationship. He also said that China appreciates the support it has received from the Maldives at the international level and considers the Maldives to be a friend and an important partner.
Maldives and China regularly hold bilateral consultations, the 6th Round of Bilateral Consultations took place in 2017.
The bilateral consultations focused on enhancing cooperation between the two countries on mutual areas of interest, and on topics relating to the prevention of the spread of Covid-19 global pandemic, economic recovery, debt service suspension, and resumption of tourism and international travel between Maldives and China.
