Foreign Minister Dr. Abdulla Khaleel has called for the restoration of human dignity and the protection of the lives of the Palestinian people.

His remarks came during the high-level segment of the 58th session of the Human Rights Council in Geneva, Switzerland.

Minister Dr. Khaleel highlighted the Maldives' strong stance on the situation in Gaza, expressing support for the cessation of attacks. However, he emphasized that halting the violence alone was not a permanent solution to the conflict. He stated that merely rebuilding the buildings destroyed by Israeli aggression would not suffice; rather, the focus must be on restoring the fundamental rights, human dignity, and lives of the Palestinian people.

The Minister also reflected on the Maldives' active role as a member of the Human Rights Council, underscoring the nation’s contributions to the promotion of global human rights. Dr. Khaleel specifically highlighted the Maldives’ efforts in establishing a voluntary trust fund to facilitate the participation of Small Island Developing States (SIDS) in the Council’s work. He also pointed to the global recognition of the right to a clean, healthy, and sustainable environment, which has become a cornerstone of the Maldives' advocacy on the international stage.

In closing, Dr. Khaleel reiterated the Maldives’ unwavering commitment to protecting human rights and assured the international community that the government would continue to work tirelessly in support of human dignity and the well-being of all peoples, including those in Palestine.

The Maldives remains a member of the UN Human Rights Council for the 2023-2025 term and continues to be an active participant in efforts to address global human rights issues.
