The Government of Maldives has submitted its written statement to the International Court of Justice (ICJ) in the advisory proceedings concerning Israel’s obligations in relation to the presence and activities of the United Nations, other international organizations, and third states in the Occupied Palestinian Territory.
The statement follows a United Nations General Assembly resolution adopted on December 19, 2024, requesting the ICJ to provide an advisory opinion on Israel’s responsibilities to ensure and facilitate the unhindered provision of essential supplies, basic services, and humanitarian assistance to the Palestinian civilian population.
In its submission, the Maldives focuses on violations of international humanitarian law and Israel’s failure to meet its obligations under human rights treaties, particularly its role in restricting Palestinian access to water. Additionally, the Maldives highlights Israel’s breaches concerning the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA), including efforts to dismantle the organization in violation of international law.
The Maldives strongly condemns Israel’s continued breaches of international law, including illegal settlement expansions, destruction of UN agencies, and attacks on aid workers. The government asserts that these actions obstruct basic services, violate Palestinian rights, and undermine the path to lasting peace.
Reaffirming its steadfast support for Palestine, the Maldives reiterated its call for an independent and sovereign Palestinian state based on pre-1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as its capital.
