Home Minister Ali Ihusaan has revealed that biometric data has been collected from more than 151,000 foreign workers as part of Operation Karangi, the government’s ongoing campaign to tackle illegal immigration.
Speaking in an interview with PSM, the minister said that as of now, the biometric database includes records of 151,694 individuals, with data including fingerprints and facial recognition photos.
The operation, launched on May 3 last year, is a coordinated effort involving the Ministry of Homeland Security and Technology, Maldives Police Service, and the Immigration Department. It aims to establish a long-term solution to the growing issue of undocumented migrant workers in the country.
Minister Ihusaan added that the government is addressing the challenges in collecting biometric data systematically and is committed to ensuring the process is efficient and accurate.
