The Hanimaadhoo International Airport is undergoing significant development, including the construction of a new terminal with a capacity of 1.5 million tourists, according to Regional Airports Managing Director Ahmed Mubeen.

A new 1,200-meter runway at Hanimaadhoo Airport was completed and opened on January 28 this year. Speaking to state media, Mubeen stated that the first phase of the Hanimaadhoo International Airport Redevelopment Project is expected to be completed by March next year. The entire runway will be operational 24 hours after the Eid holidays.

The airport is also developing a passenger terminal designed to handle 1.5 million tourists annually. This new development means tourists heading to northern resorts will fly directly to Hanimaadhoo International Airport instead of Velana International Airport. Additionally, a seaplane terminal will be developed under the second phase of the project, providing direct seaplane access to resorts from Hanimaadhoo.

The Hanimaadhoo Airport Development Project includes a 2,465-meter runway to accommodate larger aircraft, such as the Airbus A320 and Boeing 737, used for international flights. Exim Bank of India has invested $136 million (MVR 2 billion) in the project. The development will also feature a state-of-the-art passenger terminal to enhance the travel experience for up to 1.5 million passengers each year.
