Former Kendhoo MP and lawyer Ali Hussain has strongly criticized the government's proposal to reduce the number of Supreme Court judges, calling it a direct interference in the judiciary.
His remarks come as Parliament considers a bill to amend the Courts Act, reducing the number of Supreme Court judges from seven to five.
In a message shared on social media, Ali Hussain highlighted that a constitutional case has already been filed in the Supreme Court challenging amendments made to the Constitution by Parliament. He argued that while this case is ongoing, the government's push to change the composition of the Supreme Court amounts to direct interference in the judiciary. He further accused President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu of breaking his promise to uphold judicial independence.
The proposal has sparked controversy, with speculation that the government is preparing to remove two sitting justices from the Supreme Court. Meanwhile, the court is also reviewing a petition filed by Ali Hussain to overturn a constitutional amendment related to parliamentary seat allocations.
The bill to amend the Courts Act was submitted by a member of the ruling People's National Congress (PNC). If passed, it would reduce the number of Supreme Court judges from seven to five, effectively removing two justices.
